In response to the legal environmental directives being adopted throughout the world, Crydom has established a comprehensive program that is intended to promote product compliance with the new laws. At this time, the key environmental directives are from the European Community and China, with many countries/states either following these directives explicitly or instituting their own variations.

RoHS

The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have adopted legislation restricting or banning certain substances in the electrical and electronic equipment. The RoHS Directive states that: "Member States shall ensure that from 1 July, 2006, new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market does not contain lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)."

This directive is completed by a second directive concerning the management of waste of electrical and electronic equipment.

CHINA RoHS

China has released an environmental legislation called Management Methods for Control of Pollution Caused by Electronic Information Products or simply (un-officially) called “China RoHS”.

China RoHS is promulgated on February 28, 2006 by 7 different organizations, namely Ministry of Information Industry (MII), National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Ministry of Commerce, Administration of Customs, Administration of Industry and Commerce, Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), and State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA). There are 4 chapters with 27 articles in the China RoHS and it bans the same (6) materials banned by the EU RoHS.

REACH

REACH is a new European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances. The new law entered into force on 1 June 2007.

The aim of REACH is to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances. At the same time, innovative capability and competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry should be enhanced.
